Neuhaus partners with Nokomis...

See what Nokomis is saying about Neuhaus…

Nokomis Elementary School (Ukiah, CA) teachers and Principal, John McCann, see positive and enthusiastic responses from students as they participate in the Neuhaus Method of learning to read.

“This program, originally designed to support students who are having difficulty adapting the complex reading strategies, is multi-sensory and appeals to all types and levels of readers.” says 2nd grade teacher Karen Moon.

Some of the staff at Nokomis originally looked into the Neuhaus method as a means of supporting hesitant readers who might otherwise require extra support throughout their school career. After staff training, a ‘pilot’ program was initiated with the assistance of Neuhaus Center Coach, Ann Thornhill. The results were encouraging and now all students in all grades receive a daily session of the Neuhaus method. From 8:45 to 9:10 each morning, students participate in the program’s interactive methods. The program addresses all the language arts; spelling, writing, reading, and listening and speaking. During these 25 minutes, students are able to ‘warm up their brains’ to the task of reading by engaging in varied activities that highlight the strategies they need to become strong readers.

After this early morning, kinesthetic session, all students participate in reading and other language arts instruction that is provided through the District’s adopted programs. These programs mesh well with the Neuhaus method which also supports the California Learning Standards. John McCann says, “Adding the Neuhaus activities to our Language Arts teaching is turning our school around in regards to reading progress!”
