Weekly grades on spelling tests tell you little unless you focus on what students’ mistakes are telling you. HOW students spell on tests and in their daily writing assignments tells you a lot about what they know about the patterns in words. Likewise, learning the letter/sound correspondences, patterns, structure, and history of words is more valuable to students in terms of developing spelling proficiency and vocabulary than just memorizing letter strings for a test.
