Noreen Battaglia, a dyslexia therapist for the Scottish Rite’s Learning Centre for Children in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, came to Neuhaus Education Center recently, to take as many classes as she could in one week. Her goal was to get to the next level of learning on how to teach her struggling reading students, ages 5-17.

 

“This work is my life, we need words to be able to tell stories,” said Noreen. “I have been searching for a method that makes the most sense and actually works, and the method used at Neuhaus does unlock the code.”

 

After a few emails and phone calls were exchanged back and forth to work out the logistics of her trip, she was buying a plane ticket to Houston and staying with our President and CEO, Russanne Kelley. “I am usually the kind of person that takes a lot of time to make a decision like this, but it all happened really fast. It became clear and right and here I am,” said Noreen.

 

While in Houston Noreen sampled Tex-Mex at Escalante’s (not a lot of that fare in Nova Scotia!) and took many pictures. When asked what she will remember most about her experience, she replied, “I will remember the teaching practices at Neuhaus. All of my teachers were so well versed and used best teaching practices throughout our classes. They were excellent models, it was all so inspiring. I leave feeling like I've gained a wealth of knowledge to implement in my lesson plans. I see how I can add a two or five minute exercise in my lesson that will enhance and make a difference in my students' learning. I also leave feeling like I've made some friends. Learning at Neuhaus has nurtured my soul!”

 

Noreen hopes to return to Neuhaus to study further. Until then, she will be taking classes online at www.neuhaus.org.
