Cancellations: Class fees are nonrefundable. If cancellation is necessary, you must give seven (7) days notice in order to transfer these fees to another like class on a future date. After the seven-day cancellation period, the tuition fee is nontransferable.

Materials: In the event that a registered participant is unable to attend the class, it is the participant's responsibility to acquire materials from Neuhaus Education Center. Materials will be available for a period of 30 days after the class.

30th Birthday Celebration Luncheon and Lenox M. Reed Seminar

Neuhaus Education Center will hold its 30th Birthday Celebration Luncheon and Lenox M. Reed Seminar on Thursday, March 11th at the Westin Galleria Hotel We are honored to announce that Mrs. Laura W. Bush will serve as guest speaker for our largest fundraising event of the year.

Mrs. Bush is actively involved in issues of national and global importance, with a particular emphasis on literacy, health care, and human rights. A former teacher and librarian, Mrs. Bush is an enthusiastic proponent of teacher recruitment programs, and is an advocate for literacy, both in the U.S. and abroad.

Luncheon Chairs Gayle Hightower and Mary Webber and Underwriting Chairs Laura McDaniel, Camilie Patton and Cynthia Trigg are pleased to recognize Mary Farish Johnston as this year's Luncheon honoree. Mrs. Johnston has played a key role in supporting many of Houston's leading educational institutions, including Neuhaus. It is with gratitude that we honor her commitment to a successful future for all readers. The Annual Luncheon also celebrates the 2010 graduates of Neuhaus' Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program.

Immediately following the luncheon, guests are invited to attend the Lenox M. Reed Seminar with guest speaker Marcia K. Henry, Ph.D. Dr. Henry has 44 years of experience in the field of reading and dyslexia, working as a teacher, diagnostician, tutor and professor. Dr. Henry speaks frequently at conferences, and writes for and serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals.

Learning to Spell: So Much More than Memorization

Weekly grades on spelling tests tell you little unless you focus on what students’ mistakes are telling you. HOW students spell on tests and in their daily writing assignments tells you a lot about what they know about the patterns in words. Likewise, learning the letter/sound correspondences, patterns, structure, and history of words is more valuable to students in terms of developing spelling proficiency and vocabulary than just memorizing letter strings for a test. Neuhaus Responds to Chronicle Article

"Texas is among the first states to toughen its standards for colleges of education and other teacher-training programs amid criticism that too many are “cash cows” that produce weak instructors.
Under a proposed new rating system, the programs would be held accountable for their graduates' effectiveness on the job — especially regarding student achievement. Teacher programs that repeatedly fall short of the standards could lose their state accreditation."

So begins the November 2 , 2009, Houston Chronicle article "Teachers' Trainers Must Make the Grade Too."

The response from our own Regina Boulware-Gooden, Ph.D., and Suzanne Carreker, M.S., CALT-QI, reproduced below, "Brighter Futures," was printed in "Letters" in the Chronicle on November 4.

Brighter futures

For 30 years, Neuhaus Education Center has advocated that the best prevention for reading failure is a knowledgeable and skilled teacher. The article “Teachers' trainers must make the grade” (Page B1, Monday) stated that Texas will be among the first states to toughen standards for teacher preparation programs. We applaud this initiative, because research has shown that what teachers know and can do is vitally important to student outcomes.

Failure to prepare teachers adequately negatively impacts student outcomes and our future workforce. Additionally, inadequate preparation leads to high teacher turnover. Teachers need the tools to feel successful and to help their students succeed. Our research has proven that teachers who receive specific and intensive professional development in explicit and systematic reading instruction improve their literacy-related knowledge and decision-making skills.

Our partnerships with The University of St. Thomas, Stephen F. Austin State University and the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University provide experienced teachers with the information that they did not gain in their undergraduate preparation programs.

Imagine how well prepared novice teachers will be when preparation programs devote four years of instruction to helping teacher candidates become knowledgeable and skilled teachers. We would see all students become better readers with brighter futures.

Wonderful news! H-E-B has selected Neuhaus to be its nonprofit neighborhood partner for their new store opening on Buffalo Speedway! Their Grand Opening is scheduled for August 5th. The night before at a VIP reception, they will present Neuhaus with a check for $5,000.

2009 Re(a)d & White Bash

Re(a)d & White Bash - 2009 On Friday, November 6th, Friends of Neuhaus (FoN) held their annual Re(a)d & White Bash. This year the event was held at the Winter Street Studios. Art work was offered for sale by the artists located in the Winter Street Studios and from local Houstonians. A balloon raffle was held with prizes ranging from bottles of wine and autographed books by Laura Numeroff to trips to Denver, Los Angeles or New York and a $1000 shopping spree at Neiman Marcus. Guests sipped on cocktails and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres provided by El Patio and desserts from Papadoodle, danced to the music of The Slags and captured the night in the Photo Booth from Lasting Images. Proceeds from this event support the Teacher Professional Development program at the Neuhaus Education Center. Improving Overall Literacy Skills

In April 2008, Houston Independent School District (HISD)* announced an intensive literacy plan, Literacy Leads the Way, to improve overall literacy skills of the district's 200,000 students. As part of the district's plan, "a rigorous training effort will be started in partnership with Neuhaus to create experts in reading instruction throughout the district." From September 2008 to February 2009, 600 teachers, administrators, and district professional development specialists attended a five-day class at Neuhaus or online that introduced the essential components of research-based reading instruction. Lauren Nguyen, HISD elementary language arts manager, coordinated the professional development with Neuhaus Education Center.

"One goal of the 'Literacy Leads the Way' initiative is to build teacher capacity - to provide teachers with the knowledge they need to be able to teach reading successfully. This is where Neuhaus comes in as the national reading experts, right in our own backyard."

Lauren Nguyen, a former English Language Learners (ELL) teacher, goes on to say, "I learned how to teach reading from Neuhaus. I took many classes, such as Scientific Spelling, that are perfect for teaching all students, including ELL students. ELL and bilingual teachers benefit as students understand how the English language works. Neuhaus' professional development allows HISD to have a common knowledge base among all teachers and support staff and helps them all become reading experts who can serve HISD's diverse set of learners."
