2009 Re(a)d & White Bash

Re(a)d & White Bash - 2009 On Friday, November 6th, Friends of Neuhaus (FoN) held their annual Re(a)d & White Bash. This year the event was held at the Winter Street Studios. Art work was offered for sale by the artists located in the Winter Street Studios and from local Houstonians. A balloon raffle was held with prizes ranging from bottles of wine and autographed books by Laura Numeroff to trips to Denver, Los Angeles or New York and a $1000 shopping spree at Neiman Marcus. Guests sipped on cocktails and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres provided by El Patio and desserts from Papadoodle, danced to the music of The Slags and captured the night in the Photo Booth from Lasting Images. Proceeds from this event support the Teacher Professional Development program at the Neuhaus Education Center. Improving Overall Literacy Skills

Houston, Texas

In April 2008, Houston Independent School District (HISD)* announced an intensive literacy plan, Literacy Leads the Way, to improve overall literacy skills of the district's 200,000 students. As part of the district's plan, "a rigorous training effort will be started in partnership with Neuhaus to create experts in reading instruction throughout the district." From September 2008 to February 2009, 600 teachers, administrators, and district professional development specialists attended a five-day class at Neuhaus or online that introduced the essential components of research-based reading instruction. Lauren Nguyen, HISD elementary language arts manager, coordinated the professional development with Neuhaus Education Center.

"One goal of the 'Literacy Leads the Way' initiative is to build teacher capacity - to provide teachers with the knowledge they need to be able to teach reading successfully. This is where Neuhaus comes in as the national reading experts, right in our own backyard."

Lauren Nguyen, a former English Language Learners (ELL) teacher, goes on to say, "I learned how to teach reading from Neuhaus. I took many classes, such as Scientific Spelling, that are perfect for teaching all students, including ELL students. ELL and bilingual teachers benefit as students understand how the English language works. Neuhaus' professional development allows HISD to have a common knowledge base among all teachers and support staff and helps them all become reading experts who can serve HISD's diverse set of learners."

Our Mission

Neuhaus Education Center is a nonprofit foundation that was established in 1980 and is dedicated to providing professional development for educators in research-based methods of literacy instruction. We provide a structured approach to teaching the basic language skills of reading, writing, and spelling, an approach that is valuable for all students and essential for those with dyslexia. In addition, the Center is a resource for parental consultation and for adults seeking literacy education.

How do we accomplish this mission?

We equip teachers with the latest research-based strategies and materials to teach reading, writing, and spelling to all students, including those with dyslexia.
We help parents with referrals for students who need intensive, individualized reading instruction, provide phone consultations at no cost, hold parent seminars and information sessions.
We provide classes to help adults with basic language skills.

Closing the Achievement Gap

Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville, Texas, is the poorest community in the United States with a population of more than 100,000. In 1996, a group of citizens from the community established Brownsville Reads to improve the reading achievement of the 42,000 students - 90% Hispanic - in the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD). Neuhaus Education Center provided 60 hours of professional development in Language Enrichment (LE) via video conferencing for 422 first- and second-grade regular education teachers.

After the first year of the initiative, a group of 522 second-grade students was identified. Half the students had been taught by teachers who had received the professional development; the other half had been taught by teachers who had not yet received the professional development. The achievement of the group on the state-mandated reading tests was followed from third- through fifth-grade. Students who had received LE instruction in second-grade performed at statistically significantly higher levels of proficiency on the third-grade test than students in the other half of the group.* Continued higher achievement of the students who had received LE in second-grade was documented in an analysis of the fifth-grade test.**

Elsa Cardenas-Hagan, Ed.D., educator and cofounder of Brownsville Reads, stated,

"We looked to the experts in reading instruction. As a result of our collaboration, BISD was awarded the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2008, which offers $1 million in scholarships. Many BISD students will have the opportunity to go to college. We are closing the achievement gap among poor and minoity students. With Neuhaus, we changed lives."
