Why Support Neuhaus?

Why Give?

Neuhaus Education Center understands that investments in well-prepared teachers are critical to closing the achievement gap and improving reading in our Houston community. Ineffective literacy instruction doesn't just hurt a student for one year, but becomes progressively more punitive from year to year.

As Dr. Abelardo Saavedra, current HISD superintendent of schools, states, "Everything begins with reading. If we can teach our children to read well, they'll do well in everything else in school and have a much greater chance of success in the adult world."

High-quality early education has been shown to improve life-outcomes for low-income students (Growing up in Houston 2008 - 2010, Children at Risk).

Our Impact

Neuhaus “master teachers” provide teachers with proven, effective, research-based literacy curricula and instruction that include phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling that have been shown to be predictive of higher reading achievement.

Last year alone:
  • Neuhaus provided 32,031 instructional hours to 2,340 teachers
  • Approximately 51,480 students benefited from their teachers’ participation in Neuhaus's Teacher Professional Development Program
  • 150 school districts sent teachers to Neuhaus
  • 715 schools sent teachers to Neuhaus
  • 3,482 parents were served by the Neuhaus Parent Resource Office
  • 22 students graduated from the Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program
  • 50 adults attended the Adult Literacy Program
