Specialist Preparation Program Level 2 Requirements

IDA Accredited Program

Neuhaus Education Center’s Tier 3 program provides extensive coursework and supervised practica leading to certification for teachers and therapists working with individuals with dyslexia and other related disorders. Basic Language Skills is the core curriculum of the program.

Basic Language Skills – Advanced Class includes 11 days of coursework* and supervised practica that continues monitoring of student progress and consultation with teachers. Successful completion of Level 2 of this program prepares individuals to become either Reading Therapists or Dyslexia Therapists.

The Neuhaus Tier III program is recognized by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC), meets requirements for Texas licensure, and meets criteria for membership in the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).

Level 2 – Reading Therapist or Dyslexia Therapist

Level 2-A – Reading Therapist

Successful completion of the first 60 hours of Basic Language Skills-Advanced Class allows individuals with a bachelor’s degree provisional acceptance into Neuhaus Education Center’s Preparation Program, Level 2-A, Reading Therapist.

Upon completion of Preparation Program, Level 2-A, an individual is eligible to sit for the Alliance Registration Exam at the therapy level. Passage of this exam qualifies the individual as a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT). The individual is eligible to apply for licensure as a Dyslexia Practitioner.

Dyslexia Practitioners must work under supervision.

Level 2-B – Dyslexia Therapist

Successful completion of the first 60 hours of Basic Language Skills – Advanced Class allows individuals with a post-graduate degree provisional acceptance into Neuhaus Education Center’s Preparation Program, Level 2-B, Dyslexia Therapist.

Upon completion of Preparation Program, Level 2-B, Dyslexia Therapist, an individual is eligible to sit for the Alliance Registration Exam at the therapy level. Passage of this exam qualifies the individual as a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), and the individual is eligible to apply to the State of Texas for licensure as a Dyslexia Therapist.

Neuhaus Education Center will refer students to only those individuals pursuing or those who have completed the Preparation Program, Level 2-B, Dyslexia Therapist.

 Curriculum Teaching Requirements700 Hr 
 Teaching experience is accumulated in three situations that meet a minimum of four days/week, 50 minutes/day or the equivalent. A teaching situation is defined as an individual with a language learning difference and/or small group of individuals with such a difference. Teaching experience includes beginning Basic Language Skills at the initial level (Book 1) and progressing through the advanced level (Book 3).
   
 Supervised PracticaMinimum of 10 Lessons 
 Demonstrations may be live and/or video and are distributed at or near: Book 1: 5 demonstrations: Concept 20; Concept 35; Concept 45; Concept 55; and Concept 65; Book 2: 4 demonstrations: Concept 80; Concept 90; Concept 100; and Concept 110; Book 3: 1 demonstration.
   
 Documentation Requirements 
 New Student/Class Report is submitted to describe each teaching situation. Progress Reports are submitted for each teaching situation after each Mastery Check is administered. Progress reports that reflect a minimum of 700 teaching hours spanning the curriculum are required. 1 Case Study
   
 Professional Development Requirements4 Book Reports 
 The therapist-in-training reads and summarizes four books listed as teacher references inMultisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills (Birsh 11).

A therapist-in-training has five years after first enrollment in the program to complete all requirements.
